Toastmasters Discuss New Storytelling Club; More Talks Monday

Toastmasters from across the Washington, Metropolitan Area, converged in Arlington, Va., to form a storytelling club in District 27, which draws members from Northern Virginia, the District of Columbia and Southern Maryland.

District 27 Extension Chair Ralph Jones, who led discussions, emphasized the importance of storytelling in a variety of settings—including business, social and church—as well as contests.

Jones said that he came to the meeting because he wanted to help Toastmasters to tell their stories “better, faster, cheaper.”

Other attendees showed their enthusiasm for the new storytelling club by driving to Arlington, from as far as Southern Maryland.

Each attendee said a few words about why he or she wanted to build a storytelling club in District 27.

Kristin Lewis, a scientist, said that she wanted to enhance her storytelling skills so that she could use stories to communicate scientific information at work. “I would like to make science more accessible,” added Lewis, a member of NOVA Toastmasters

Janine Bilyeu, another NOVA Toastmasters member, indicated that she sees storytelling as way to grow herself.

“I do have this pull towards being a performer,” Bilyeu said.

Toastmasters at the meeting exchanged ideas about the club’s goals, and proposed names for it.  They also designated several officers for the new club. Samuel Bisbey of First Edition signed on as interim president, while Athuretta Martin said she would serve as education vice president

While attendees expressed satisfaction that they had accomplished a lot during the meeting, they also agreed that more work needs to be done. For example, the club meeting time and meeting location have not yet been set.

District 27 has scheduled a teleconference on Monday, December 11, to iron out these details. The information for this teleconference are printed below:
