Network, Learn and LEAD at Toastmasters Spring 2018 Conference

by Samantha Lynch-Johnson

What is the recipe for a stellar District 27 Spring Conference? Begin with equal parts networking event and educational boot camp. Add a bit competition and mix with the flavor of a family reunion. If you’ve never experienced a conference, make it a point to attend this year. Our theme is Turning the Tides LEAD (Learn, Evaluate, Achieve, Develop) 2018.

Whether you are new to Toastmasters or have been with the organization for many years, it’s a must-attend event. It’s also an opportunity to celebrate members’ achievements, participate in workshops and witness two different competitions. According to Brenda Lawrence, D27 Program Quality Director, “New Toastmasters especially, have a chance to see what makes this organization great, beyond the club experience”. Lawrence stressed the importance of encouraging new club members to attend: It helps them understand that beyond their personal speaking goals, Toastmasters International develops leadership, friendship and service.
But is there anything in our 2018 Spring Conference for the veteran club member, who has never attended? Yes. With the implementation of the Pathways program, seasoned club members can see how our district is turning the tides (growing from our legacy program into Pathways) learn how to lead.

This spring, our conference will feature Craig Valentine, the 1999 World Champion of Public Speaking®. Like our other guest speakers, Valentine will lead an educational session at the conference. The conference organizers have planned workshops and content that will build, not only your personal speaking skill, but strengthen your leadership muscles as well. In addition to the educational sessions, the Evaluation and International Speech contests are great opportunities for Toastmasters test their speaking skills. And don’t forget the festivities including the always surprising talent showcase
“There is an opportunity for everyone,” said Lawrence “The opportunity to attend, but also to volunteer and see how the event comes together, to serve in a bigger cause and to learn, evaluate achieve and develop”.

As the May 4-5 nears, and the excitement builds, register for the Spring Conference to join us at Sheraton Old Town Alexandria.
