Surrey Street Market, a 750-year-old London institution, has undergone a vibrant transformation thanks to the creative collaboration between Bob Design and Croydon School of Art. This project, funded by the Greater London Authority, aimed to breathe new life into the market's rich history and enhance its daily hustle and bustle. The result is a visually captivating identity that seamlessly blends the market's ancient roots with modern, playful design elements.
What makes this initiative particularly fascinating is the unique approach taken by Bob Design. Instead of a traditional refresh, they delved into the market's diverse histories, from royal charters to medieval vaults, and even the birthplace of dubstep. This research informed the creation of a toolkit of typeforms, colors, and shapes that embody the market's essence. The new typeface, for instance, draws inspiration from market signage unearthed in archives, with informal quirks added to convey randomness, grassroots creativity, and bursts of imagination.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this project is the collaboration between Bob Design and Croydon School of Art students. The design practice invited a year group from the school to play with and road test the visual identity, fostering a sense of community and engagement. This approach not only ensured that the identity resonated with the market's diverse stakeholders but also created a platform for creative expression and learning. The students' enthusiasm and care left a lasting impression on the design team, leading to the invitation of seven students for internships.
The new identity is characterized by quirky pictograms that embody inclusivity through charming geometry. These pictograms emerged from dialogue between local stakeholders and Croydon School of Art, beginning as collaged cut-outs and ending up as flexible graphics across the entire identity. Wayfinding assets, such as arrows, take wiggly and wacky shapes, reflecting the market's bustling nature and the creativity of its visitors.
In my opinion, this project is a testament to the power of collaboration and the importance of community engagement in design. By involving local stakeholders and art students, Bob Design has created an identity that is not only visually captivating but also deeply rooted in the market's history and culture. This approach raises a deeper question: How can design be used to foster a sense of community and enhance the everyday experiences of people in public spaces?
Looking ahead, I believe that this project has the potential to inspire similar initiatives in other markets and public spaces. The collaboration between Bob Design and Croydon School of Art has demonstrated the value of bringing together diverse stakeholders and fostering a sense of ownership and pride in the design process. As we continue to navigate the challenges of urban renewal and community engagement, this project serves as a shining example of how design can be a powerful tool for social change and cultural expression.
